:Akela Award

With approval from the Sam Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, SFWS offers an Akela Award for Cub Scouts. Sessions are held on designated Saturdays at the Sanctuary, beginning promptly at 11:00 am with a flag ceremony and ending at 1:00 pm. In case of inclement weather, we have a covered area within view of the animals.

Group Leader attendance is required. The Educational Guide that the Scouts will be using during the session is available here. Scout Leaders may download and print a copy of the Guide to use in preparing the Scouts before their visit. Scout Leaders may also download and print copies for each Scout of the handouts to fill out following their visit. The handouts will be turned in to the Scout Leader for credit in obtaining their badges or pins.

We request a payment of $10.00 per participant, which includes a SFWS Akela Award patch. For other family members wishing to attend, we request a donation of $5.00 per person. Payment is due when you arrive for the session. Since the focus of these sessions is on the Scout, we ask that parents plan on staying with their other children who are not Scouts. Scouts may bring a snack and drink and will be expected to clean up their area afterward.

If you are involved in the Cub Scout Program, completion of the Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary Akela Award also qualifies you for the Wildlife Conservation Academics Belt Loop and Wildlife Conservation Academics Pin. These can be purchased at any Scout shop.

During the session, Scouts will have an opportunity to learn about:

  • The wolves and wolfdogs of SFWS
  • Gray wolves (Canis lupus) and other wolf species
  • Conservation and why it is important to protect natural resources
  • The food chain
  • Camouflage
  • They will also have an opportunity to make a plaster cast of a wolf track (see Scout Educational Guide for details)

This is an exciting opportunity to earn a badge within the sight and sound of real wolves and wolfdogs. It is a rare opportunity not available to many Scout groups. For further details and to sign up, contact scouts@wolvesofsaintfrancis.org.

Bring the registration form below with you when you arrive at the Sanctuary.
